Tappity-tap-tap

I learned to type in grade 7, and when I took typing in grade 8, my teacher, Mr. Galambos, was rather taken with my skills. Instead of doing the grade 8 curriculum, he had me do grade 9 material instead. If already being able to type wasn't bad enough for a first-year high-school kid, my teacher decided to announce this "special student" to the entire class so that everyone knew there was greatness amongst the class. He was already envisioning me taking grade 10 typing in grade 9, etc. Perhaps one day, I would be able to type the 120 words per minute he could.

In reality, I ended my typing instruction after I passed the grade 9 typing in grade 8. Being a nerdy computer-enthusiast, I was getting ample practice at home on Friday and Saturday nights. Fast-forward to 1997, if you will. A former co-worker of mine was trying to get a job at a major university in Vancouver, and she lacked the typing speed that was necessary for her to satisfy the bureaucratic requirements of the institution. The person hiring her didn't care, but they had to have a passing grade on paper. Enter me. I'm not sure how I was coerced into doing this, but I took the typing test for her. I believe I scored somewhere in the neighbourhood of 65 wpm. This was not as fast as I could type at my maximum, but I was under a lot of pressure, and I lost time correcting my mistakes.

Fast forward to today. I came across a site that has a simple typing test to see your speed. See Figure A for my results:

Best typing speed

Take that, Mr. Galambos!!

Fellow touch-typists, take the test and send me your results!
