Streaming Media Calculator 1.5
Streaming Media Calculator 1.5.1 is a Macintosh application to aid you in calculating what sort of bandwidth needs your streaming media will need. You can calculate the traffic usage in gigabytes by specifying the number of users expected to view your stream in combination with either the encoding size and duration of the stream, or the total file size of the streaming media.

I wrote this application, because I was noticing that one of the guys I work with, Jurgen (hint: view source), was manually doing the same calculations over and over again while talking to clients. (Jurgen heads up BOPJET Media, an affiliate company to the company I work for, Bitmovers Systems. BOPJET offers many hosting services, Quicktime Streaming included.) I decided to make life easier for him by creating this little utility to streamline those pesky calculations.

The first version was met with grattitude, however some suggestions were made as to how it could be better. It was to be released to the clients of BOPJET so they could do calculations on their own too, but I insisted that I implement the suggestions first, and then release it to the public. After a few weeks (not all of which were spent programming -- this isn't a rocket science app, after all) Streaming Media Calculator 1.5 was ready for lift off. It was posted on the BOPJET website, and also to Version Tracker, a popular website for Macintosh applications. In the first two days, it had (if memory serves correctly) over five hundred downloads. The last I checked, it has had 2,264 downloads, with a total of two user ratings, both giving it five stars.

Since the release of version 1.5, more suggestions have come in as to how it could be better. I am already thinking about version 2.0, but it may be a while before it is released to the public. I wrote versions 1.0 and 1.5 in REALbasic 1.1.1, a rapid-application-development (RAD) environment for the MacOS which makes use of the visual basic language. It is actually a really nice environment, except for the language itself, which I have grown to despise. Version 2.0 of the Streaming Media Calculator will be a Mac OS X application with an exciting new name (you'll have to wait and see to find out what it will be!). It will be grand!

You can download the latest version from here: MacBinary (391K) or BinHex (530K). A 68k version is available upon request; contact me if you require one.

Testimonies:

"The best streaming media calculator, to date." - Mike Wood

"That is a very cool thing." - Jenn Strom
